Cory entered construction right after high school, starting as a laborer at Big-D around 1995–1996. He advanced through hands-on roles like carpenter, concrete crew member, and foreman, building real-world know-how. While at Utah State University, he managed quality control on a $100 million healthcare project, honing his standards.​

Post-college, he shifted to corporate roles in estimating, project management, and business development, gaining a full understanding of the project flow. This path taught him how solid planning cuts delays and eases fieldwork.​
