UK-based biotech company Mykor has secured £4 million in funding to expand its low-carbon construction systems made from industrial and agricultural waste. The investment will help the company scale production and strengthen its position in the growing sustainable construction market.

The funding round was led by Clean Growth Fund. Other investors included the British Business Bank’s South West Investment Fund through The FSE Group, Green Angel Ventures, and Innovate UK’s investor partnership programme.

With this latest round, Mykor’s total funding has reached around £7.5 million.

Using Waste to Create Construction Materials

Mykor develops construction materials using waste streams from industries and agriculture. The company uses engineered mycelium, a root-like fungal structure, to grow building materials through a controlled biofabrication process.

The company focuses on producing low-carbon alternatives for the construction sector, which continues to face pressure to reduce emissions and improve sustainability. Instead of depending on traditional resource-heavy materials, Mykor’s system converts waste into usable construction products.

Its technology is designed to support the production of insulation and prefabricated building systems while reducing environmental impact.

Focus on Scalable Manufacturing

Mykor aims to integrate its technology into existing industrial supply chains rather than creating entirely new manufacturing systems. The company says this approach can help speed up adoption across the construction industry.

The production process combines engineered fungal strains, green chemistry methods, and automated manufacturing systems. According to the company, this allows materials to be produced more efficiently while maintaining construction performance standards.

Company Plans for Expansion

Olivia Page, CEO and Co-founder of Mykor, said the investment will help the company expand its commercial operations and scale its manufacturing capabilities.

The funding will also support partnerships with contractors, manufacturers, and supply-chain partners as demand for sustainable building materials continues to grow.

Growing Interest in Sustainable Building Solutions

The construction industry is increasingly searching for lower-carbon materials as governments and businesses push for cleaner infrastructure and climate-focused development goals.

Mykor’s technology reflects a broader shift toward bio-based construction materials and circular manufacturing systems that reuse industrial waste instead of sending it to landfill. With fresh funding and investor support, the company is now preparing for its next stage of growth in the sustainable construction sector.
